Module 4: Understanding, practicing scholarly writing
[weeks 7, 8]
Competency IV: To demonstrate an understanding of the principles of scholarly writing, the nature of clear expression and the use of APA style.
WEEK 7 (10/12/2015 - 10/18/2015)
Essential question(s): What are some of the principles of scholarly writing and how are they applied to writing in an academic context? What does scholarly expression look like? How does scholarly writing differ from other kinds of writing that you might use? How is APA formatting used as a component of scholarly writing, as well as a way to observe certain conventions of writing and publication? Objectives:
Overview, purpose Recall earlier that I subdivided our discussion about scholarly writing into two types of organizational structures: the essay and the research report. Hopefully the previous two modules on essay and research report writing began to address the organizational aspects of scholarly writing. I also subdivided the area of academic writing into two components: organizational structure and expression. In this module we look at some of the issues related to expression - that is, writing with clarity and concision. In addition we consider some of the basics of writing in APA format, which become important as you want to produce scholarly work for school and publication. Read/watch
